Randy Abbott 2-2008.jpg In his work as President of Schwan’s University, Randy Abbott has learned that so much has changed in what it takes to be an effective leader today that many organizations are getting leadership development wrong. People are being put into positions for which they are not prepared. Leadership Development – The Right Right Way is about going beyond behavior-based leadership competency models, and focusing more on developing the right values and the right-brain skills required to lead flatter, faster, more innovative organizations through rapid and constant change.

This session – with the help and involvement of the OD experts who attend – will delve into:

An assessment of current practices of leadership development – and where they are failing
Making the case for fundamental organizational change – the need for speed and fluidity
What it takes to develop leaders who are creative, innovative, and ethical
Focusing on doing “the right thing” – getting beyond development practices predominantly concerned with creating personal pathways to the top
Brainstorming about what organizations of the future will look like and what it will take to develop the right leaders

Randy Abbott was President of Schwan’s University, where he was responsible for all organizational learning, organization development and talent management. Randy joined Schwan Food Co. in 2005 and helped Schwan’s University (SU) build and maintain a national reputation for excellence within the industry. SU was named Best Overall Corporate University by Corporate University Xchange (CUX), and won awards in seven out of eight categories at the CUX Awards for Excellence and Innovation. The organization also has been recognized for international excellence as a winner in the American Society for Training & Development's annual BEST Awards competition. Previous to leading Schwan’s University, Randy spent 25 years in academics as a professor at Southwest Minnesota State University. While there he served as the Provost who successfully led the turnaround of the organization to the fastest growing university in the Midwest. He also served as vice president for academic affairs, vice president for academic and student affairs, chief operating officer, chairperson for the business department and interim vice president for advancement. Randy also served as the Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow, where he advised the SMSU Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). He was named “Sam Walton Fellow of the Year” at the National SIFE Conference in 2007. Randy received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School. Currently he is a consultant with Schwan Food Co.
